Early summer mornings I’d wake up to a tapping on my back window screen, “You helping or what?”, my mom would mock me after I promised her the night before I’d be up before the robins. Notorious for getting things started before the sun got “too hot”, she’d pack us all into her Jeep and drive us to our local nursery. Most days we’d only go for garden soil or fertilizer, but my favorite rides were in the late spring when we’d push the seats down and fill the truck with flowers.

Every year I choose Marigolds. The yellow and orange hues reminded me of the horizon at sunrise, and while I lived too far into the city to see the sun go from dusk to dawn, these marigolds, like soil beneath me, carried my dreams of one day viewing the sky a little differently.
